Inspiration:
“Sterling Cooper” was created for the Mid-Michigan Art Guild black-and-white themed exhibition. Working in watercolor under this restriction was a deliberate challenge — watercolor is prized for its color luminosity, and removing that element means every shadow, reflection, and gradation must be handled with precision. I chose Lamp Black as my sole pigment for its warm, smoky quality, which perfectly suited the mid-century vibe I wanted to capture. As a former art director in advertising and a lover of the TV series Mad Men, I used objects like the old fashioned glass, lipstick tube, cigarette, and typewriter to symbolize the charismatic and complicated characters who worked at the Sterling Cooper agency during the show. This piece is both a technical exploration of restraint in watercolor and a personal homage to a world I’ve lived and admired.
